Granada is a city of viewpoints. As it’s all built on slopes, from almost any high point you get a view that feels like a gift: the Alhambra right in front of you, Sierra Nevada in the background and the rooftops of the Albaicín at your feet. The San Nicolás one is the famous one, but there are plenty more, and some with far fewer people. Here are my favourites, and the best time to go to each.
Let’s get into it.
Mirador de San Nicolás: the postcard of Granada
It’s the best known and the one that shows up in every photo: the whole Alhambra in front of you with snow-capped Sierra Nevada behind it. It sits in the heart of the Albaicín and at sunset it fills up completely. It’s worth it all the same. My trick: if you want it quiet, head up mid-morning; and for sunset, get there early to grab a spot at the railing.
Mirador de San Cristóbal
A little higher up and with far fewer people. From here you can see the whole Albaicín spread out below and part of the city walls. It’s one of my favourites for escaping the crowds at San Nicolás without giving up the views.
Mirador de la Lona
More tucked away and not very touristy, with a different view of the city and the Albaicín. Perfect if you like finding corners where there’s almost nobody around.
Carmen de los Mártires
Right next to the Alhambra, these are lovely free gardens that few people visit, with viewpoints over the city. A quiet little gem for a stroll, especially in spring.
Other corners with a view
- Placeta de Carvajales: a tiny, very intimate viewpoint in the Albaicín.
- Mirador de la Churra: in the Sacromonte, with the Alhambra from a different angle.
- Paseo de los Tristes: from below, with the Alhambra rising up above you.
The best plan: a viewpoint at sunset
For me, the best thing to do in Granada is to climb up to a viewpoint at sunset and watch the Alhambra turn golden and then light up. I genuinely recommend it. It fits perfectly after a walk around the Albaicín, so take a look at the guide to Granada’s neighbourhoods to combine the two, and what to see in Granada for the rest of your trip.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best viewpoint in Granada?
The San Nicolás one is the most famous for its view of the Alhambra. If you’d rather have fewer people around, go for San Cristóbal or the Carmen de los Mártires.
Where can you see the Alhambra best?
From the Mirador de San Nicolás, in the Albaicín, you get the classic head-on view. The Paseo de los Tristes shows it from below, rising up above you.
What time should you go to the viewpoints?
Sunset is the star moment, with the Alhambra glowing golden, although it gets very busy. Mid-morning you’ll see them quiet and with lovely light.
Are Granada’s viewpoints free?
Yes, all the viewpoints are free to access. Only the Carmen de los Mártires is a garden with opening hours, but it’s free too.
